The main aim of conducting National Service Scheme program in Netaji Subhas University is to create Personality Development through Community Service. This program is to motivate and encourage the social welfare thoughts in the students and to provide service to the society without any prejudice. NSS volunteers are dedicated to this work to ensure that every one in our society who is needy gets every possible help from them so that they can also enhance their standards and lead a life of dignity in the society with all of us. In doing so, the volunteers themselves learn a lot like how to struggle and how to lead a happy life in the extreme scarcity of resources and so on.

The National Service Scheme is personality development through social service or community service. This program aims at inculcating social welfare thoughts among the students by providing service to the society without any prejudice.

The University has a NSS unit, with an objective to develop the attitude of social service among the professional students and to make them into responsible citizens.

Functions and Responsibilities

Encouraging students to work together along with the adults in rural areas near the University campus.
Developing qualities of leadership by discovering the latent potential among the students as well as local youth (Rural and Urban), with a view to involve them more intimately in the development programs and also to ensure proper maintenance of the assets created during the camps.
Emphasizing on dignity of labor and self-help and the need for combining physical work with intellectual pursuits.
Encouraging youth to participate enthusiastically in the process of national development and promote national integration, through corporate living and cooperative action.
Making education more relevant to the present situation to meet the needs of the community and supplement the education of the university/college students by bringing them face to face with the rural situation.
Providing opportunities to the students to play their role in planning and executing development projects which would not only help in creating durable community assets in rural areas and urban slums but also results in the improvement of quality of life of the economically and socially weaker sections of the community.
Understand the community in which they work.

Our Motto

The motto of the National Service Scheme (N.S.S) is “Not Me, But You”, i.e. “Service before Self.” It expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless services and appreciation of another man’s point of view and also show consideration towards fellow human beings. It underlines the welfare of an individual which is most necessary as it ultimately leads to the welfare of the society as a whole. Therefore the N.S.S. should aim to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day activities. NSS works in collaboration with non-profitable and socially responsible organizations. The NSS unit has adopted notable number of Govt. schools.

Objective: Personality development through community service

Symbol:
The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.
Badge:
The NSS Symbol is embossed on the badge. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
NSS Day:
NSS was formally launched on 24th September 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.
NSS Song:
During Silver Jubilee Year, the NSS theme song has been composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song and sing the song during NSS events.

Should have passion towards Social Service.
Possesses good conduct and regular in academics.
Good academic track record.

Reward to Students

Regular NSS Certificate/Regular NSS Certificate-will is issued by the Netaji Subhas University NSS Cell for those who have participated in Regular NSS Activities in their academic duration.
Best Volunteer Award at the institution level is given by the institution at the end of the academic year.
